Visit Chile, for its landscapes?

Visit Chile, for its landscapes?

by Jorge Narbona

Torres del Paine, Patagonia

It is well known that Chile dazzles when it is spoken about landscapes. From North to South, the diversity of ecosystems, from the altiplano to the remote corners of Patagonia, offer us the most beautiful places to contemplate and remember. In fact, photographs speak for themselves.

However, Chile is much more than its beautiful natural surroundings. Being a narrow country, the cultural wealth overflows from the sea and the mountains. Not only do we have a unique idiosyncrasy, typical food and even a language of our own. “Here you learn Chilean, not Spanish”, travelers say as a joke. There are also ancestral cultures, with 9 recognized ethnic groups, which invite us to get to know their culture and wisdom from the northern highlands to the southernmost city in the world, Puerto Williams.

INDIGENOUS CULTURES

These original peoples are not characterized by having large buildings or monuments, like the famous Incas or Mayas. Their wealth lies in words, as Elicura Chihuailaf, poet of the Mapuche people, tells us: “My grandparents, my people who left me the culture of my ancestors, taught me that the most extraordinary wealth is words. The word that comes from nature. The force of it that expresses our thoughts.”

All this wealth, this wisdom, often underestimated by the new inhabitants of these lands, are lessons that these native peoples want to transmit and make known. As they say, life is a journey and it is not just about getting to know more places, trying more foods or having more pictures. This perception of “accumulating” can be extrapolated to many areas, don’t you think?

They teach us that life is also about an inner, spiritual journey, connecting with nature, its inhabitants and its spirit.

All their cosmovisión, love and respect for their Mother Earth, is reflected through their daily life: the food, their way of communication, their way of dressing and even how they play their instruments. Their philosophy speaks of “Good Living”, which they consider an integral lifestyle, where not only the needs of subsistence are satisfied, but also those of protection, identity, creativity, leisure, affection, freedom and participation.

All this wealth of Chile is not well known, but after years of ethnic struggles in our country, they open their doors so that you can live an authentic experience with them, get to know them, learn about their customs and world view and return with a gift that no building can ever give you.

And as if that were not enough, you will always be surrounded by the beautiful natural environment that Chile has to offer and that will wrap you up in a welcoming embrace.
